This is the story of Macon "Milkman" Dead, heir to the
richest black family in a Midwestern town, as he makes a voyage of
rediscovery, travelling southwards geographically and inwards
spiritually. Through the enlightenment of one man, the novel
recapitulates the history of slavery and liberation.
Song of Solomon is a work of outstanding beauty and power, whose story covers the years from the 1930's to the 1960's in America. At its centre is Macon Dead Jr, the son of a wealthy black property owner, who has been brought up to revere the white world. Macon learns about the tyranny of white society from his friend Guitar, though he is more concerned to escape the tyranny of his father. So while Guitar joins a terrorist group of poor blacks, Macon goes home to the South, lured by tales of buried family treasure. His journey leads to the discovery of something more valuable than gold, his past. Yet the truth about his origins and his true self is not fully revealed to Macon until he and Guitar meet once again in powerful, and deadly confrontation.
Die amerikanische Schriftstellerin Toni Morrison wurde am 18. Februar 1931 in Lorain, Ohio als zweites von vier Kindern eines schwarzen Arbeiterehepaares geboren. Nach dem Besuch örtlicher Schulen 1949 Beginn des Studiums an der Howard University in Washington, DC. Erste Erfahrungen mit dem Südstaaten-Rassismus während einer Tournee als Mitglied der Universitätstheatergruppe. Ab 1953 Anglistikstudium an der renommierten Cornell University bis zum Magisterabschluss 1955. Lehrtätigkeit, zunächst an der Texas Southern University (1955-1957), danach an der Howard University (1957-1964). Ehe mit dem jamaikanischen Architekten Harold Morrison, aus der zwei Söhne hervorgehen. Nach der Scheidung 1964 Rückkehr nach Lorain. 1965 Umzug nach New York und Lektorentätigkeit. In ihren Werken beschreibt sie unter anderem die Rassenprobleme in ihrer Heimat sowie die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen innerhalb der schwarzen Bevölkerung. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Pulitzer-Preis (1988) und dem Literatur-Nobelpreis (1993) gehört sie zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der afroamerikanischen Literatur.
