Johnson stammt aus Ohio, studierte dort Fotografie und Filmwissenschaften und arbeitete als Produktionsassistent für den Regisseur und Drehbuchschreiber Frank Darabont, unter anderem für den Oscar-nominierten Film, "Die Verurteilten". Er verfasste das Drehbuch zu "Red Riding Hood - Unter dem Wolfsmond". Johnson lebt im kalifornischen Burbank.
