Martha Cooper ist freie Fotojournalistin und seit über 25 Jahren auf urbane Straßenkunst und Architektur spezialisiert. Ihre Fotos wurden weltweit veröffentlicht und ausgestellt. 1966 erhielt sie ihr Diplom in Ethnologie in Oxford, England und kehrte 1967 in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück, um am Smithsonian Institut in Washington D.C. zu arbeiten, bevor sie eine Kuratoren-Assistenzstelle am Museum der Universität in Yale antrat. Sie arbeitete drei Jahre als Fotografin bei der NewYork Post, gab diese Anstellung aber 1980 auf, um mehr Zeit zu haben für die Fotografie von U-Bahn Graffiti und Breaking. Martha Cooper ist Fotodirektorin bei City Lore, dem New Yorker Zentrum für urbane Volkskunst. Sie lebt und arbeitet in New York.
