Zwei Bücher über die Geschichte der Globalisierung

Die Debatte über die Globalisierung hat glücklicherweise ihre zweite und anspruchsvollere Stufe erreicht. In der ersten Stufe erschienen zahlreiche häufig platte Werke, die ohne bedeutenden theoretischen oder empirischen Tiefgang die Globalisierung entweder (meist) in Bausch und Bogen verdammten oder sie (seltener) glorifizierten. Dieses Schwarzweißdenken gehört in der Fachwelt mittlerweile weitgehend der Vergangenheit an; materialreichere und differenziertere Einschätzungen setzen sich durch. Man fühlt sich an eine Bemerkung Joseph Schumpeters über ökonomische Fragen im Allgemeinen erinnert. "Wollen Sie eine simple oder eine nützliche Antwort?", fragte Schumpeter einmal. "Man kann entweder das eine oder das andere haben, aber nicht beides zugleich."
