It is found in most of Europe, except the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. The wingspan is 8-9 mm. Adults are on wing May to June. At times there is a second generation in August. The larvae create a gallery mine in the leaves of Alnus glutinosa, Alnus incana, Alnus viridis or Myrica gale. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described.
