Bisphenol A, also called BPA, is an industrial chemical introduced
in the 1960s. It is primarily used to make polycarbonate plastics
and epoxy resins. Today BPA is found in many products such as water
bottles, dental fillings and sealants, dental and medical devices,
eyeglass lenses, digital media (e.g. DVDs, CDs), household
electronic and sports equipment, as well as in toys and other
consumer goods. According to several studies carried out on BPA,
the chemical not only endangers human health and both aquatic and
terrestrial environments, but also can affect mating behavior in
some species leading to interspecies reproduction.
