Alan Paton (1903-1988) wurde als Sohn weißer Eltern in Südafrika geboren. Einige Jahre war er als Lehrer tätig, dann übernahm die Leitung einer Einrichtung für kriminelle und gefährdete Jugendliche in Johannesburg. Er hätte vom Erfolg seines Romans leben können, aber in der Sorge um sein Land ging er in die Politik und wurde Präsident der später verbotenen Liberalen Partei Südafrikas, die sich gegen die Rassentrennung einsetzte.
