Shakespeare-Übersetzer Frank Günther und der Brand
William Shakespeare und Brand-Katastrophen gehören offenbar zusammen. 1613, drei Jahre vor seinem Tod, brannte das Londoner Globe Theatre, dessen Miteigentümer er war, vollständig ab, und zwar, wie es die Ironie des Schicksals wollte, während einer Vorstellung von „Heinrich VIII.“. Das Feuer war ein schwerer Schlag für Shakespeare und seine Truppe, die von einem Tag auf den anderen ihre Spielstätte und damit ihre Einnahmequelle verloren hatten. Ein Jahr später wurde das Theater zwar wieder aufgebaut, aber Shakespeare war nicht mehr dabei. Er hatte seine Anteile an die Kollegen verkauft. Offenbar fühlte er sich zu alt, um noch einmal neu anzufangen. „Aber“, sagt Frank Günther, „man müsste es ihm ja nicht nachmachen“.
  Seit den Siebzigerjahren übersetzt Günther, geboren 1947, Shakespeares Gesamtwerk ins Deutsche. Angefangen hat dieses Mammutprojekt ganz harmlos, als er, damals noch Regisseur, „Viel Lärm um nichts“ in Angriff nahm, eine Auftragsarbeit, die der studierte Anglist mit Gewalt und einer gehörigen Portion Naivität in zwei Wochen …

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) gilt als einer der größten Dichter und Dramatiker der Weltgeschichte. Er verfasste zahlreiche Dramen, Tragödien, Komödien und Gedichte, mit denen er schon zu Lebzeiten Anerkennung und Wohlstand errang. Aber erst in den folgenden Jahrhunderten wurde er zum Prototypen des literarischen Genies, ohne den die Entwicklung der neueren Literatur von Goethe über Brecht bis in die Gegenwart hinein undenkbar ist.
