Autorenporträt

Lauren Oliver is the cofounder of media and content development company Glasstown Entertainment, where she serves as the President of Production. She is also the New York Times bestselling author of the YA novels Replica , Vanishing Girls, Panic, and the Delirium trilogy: Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem, which have been translated into more than thirty languages. The film rights to both Replica and Lauren's bestselling first novel, Before I Fall, were acquired by Awesomeness Films. Before I Fall was adapted into a major motion picture starring Zoey Deutch. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017, garnering a wide release from Open Road Films that year. Oliver is a 2012 E. B. White Read-Aloud Award nominee for her middle-grade novel Liesl & Po, as well as author of the middle-grade fantasy novel The Spindlers and The Curiosity House series, co-written with H.C. Chester. She has written one novel for adults, Rooms. Oliver co-founded Glasstown Entertainment with poet and author Lexa Hillyer. Since 2010, the company has developed and sold more than fifty-five novels for adults, young adults, and middle-grade readers. Some of its recent titles include the New York Times bestseller Everless, by Sara Holland; the critically acclaimed Bonfire, authored by the actress Krysten Ritter; and The Hunger by Alma Katsu, which received multiple starred reviews and was praised by Stephen King as ?disturbing, hard to put down? and ?not recommended...after dark.? Leben in einem totalitären Staat
Liebe als politische Gefahr, als Bedrohung für Ordnung und Sicherheit? Der amerikanische Staat der Zukunft, in dem die 17-jährige Lena lebt, hat sich in einen Hochsicherheitstrakt verwandelt, streng bewacht vom Militär. Offiziell dient alles dem Schutz der Bevölkerung, der Wahlspruch lautet: Sicherheit, Unversehrtheit, Gemeinschaft. Auch die Kommunikation ist eingeschränkt, Intranet-Wachleute programmieren die Zugangsbeschränkungen im Netz.
Dieser Überwachungsstaat fühlt sich nur durch eine moderne Pest bedroht, die Krankheit Deliria, Auslöserin für Gefühle, für Empathie, für Empfindungen. Schon die Kinder in der Schule lernen, dass sie mit dem Tod endet. Lisa weiß, „der Präsident und das Konsortium haben die Liebe als Krankheit identifiziert und die Wissenschaftler entwickelten ein Heilmittel dagegen“, die Operation. Bei jedem Jugendlichen wird zu seinem achtzehnten Geburtstag ein Eingriff im Gehirn vorgenommen, erst dann gilt er als geheilt, als vollwertiges Mitglied der Gemeinschaft, „von Verlangen befreit, in der Erinnerung als auch in der Zukunft“. Lisa kann diesen Tag kaum erwarten, denn die „Heilung“ bedeutet auch, dass über ihre Zukunft entschieden wird und ihr die Gutachter, die sie klassifizieren, einen Ehemann zuteilen.
Bis zu diesem Eingriff werden die Jugendlichen als öffentliche Gefahr angesehen, die man vor sich selbst und ihren Gefühlen schützen muss. Nachts suchen Wachmannschaften nach denen, die sich nicht an die Ausgangssperre halten, oder zu offensichtlich ihre Zuneigung auch ihren Kindern gegenüber zeigen. Die Unterdrückung der menschlichen Gefühle artet in einen religiösen Wahn aus, von dem das ganze Staatswesen erfasst zu sein scheint. Und dem sich die kritische Jugend in Geheimtreffen, wilden Festen und spektakulären oppositionellen Aktionen zu entziehen sucht. Ein Tanz auf dem Vulkan bis zum achtzehnten Geburtstag, bei dem auch Lisa und ihre beste Freundin mitmachen.  
Das Hörbuch verwandelt die literarische Vorlage, die Dystopie der amerikanischen Autorin Lauren Oliver, in ein eindringliches gesellschaftliches Drama. Die Wandlung der Heldin von einer kritiklosen Anhängerin des Staates zu einer Oppositionellen, die für ihr menschliches Recht auf Liebe kämpft, überzeugt durch die Modulation der Stimme von Annina Braunmiller. Auch die leidenschaftliche Beziehung zu einem Außenseiter wird von ihr getragen. Immer schwingt Verzweiflung mit, denn als die beiden entdeckt werden, antwortet der Staat mit brutalen Sanktionen.
