Der Brite Gerald Martin hat eine große Biographie über Gabriel García Márquez geschrieben. Sie erzählt den Aufstieg des Kolumbianers vom bettelarmen Studenten zum Nobelpreisträger und Popstar, der so sicher auf seinem Thron sitzt wie Mickymaus.

MADRID, im Januar

Am 9. April 1948 gegen 13 Uhr verlässt Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, der charismatischste politische Führer, den Kolumbien im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert hervorgebracht hat, seine Anwaltskanzlei in Bogotá, um mit Kollegen aus der Liberalen Partei zu Mittag zu essen. Da tritt auf der Straße ein Mann auf ihn zu und feuert aus nächster Nähe mehrere Schüsse ab. Gaitán stirbt kurz darauf. Was folgt, ist völliges Chaos, das als "Bogotazo" in die Geschichte einging. Gerald Martin is Andrew Mellon Professor of Modern Languages at the University of Pittsburgh and president of the International Institute of Ibero-American Literature. Publications include Journeys Through the Labyrinth (1989), critical editions of Miguel Angel Asturias's Hombres de maiz (1992) and El Senor Presidente (2000), as well as several major contributions to the Cambridge History of Latin America.
