Pediatric Obesity

Childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. This book reassesses the roles of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of childhood obesity and reviews new studies of the effects of lifestyle, pharmacological and surgical interventions.

The past generation has witnessed striking increases in the prevalence of childhood obesity and co-morbidities including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver disease. Despite a wealth of investigation, there is considerable controversy regarding the etiology of childhood obesity and the optimal approaches for prevention and treatment. This book will re-assess the roles of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of childhood obesity and will review critically new studies of the effects of lifestyle, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions. This evidence-based approach will provide a useful resource for all healthcare providers concerned with the evaluation and care of children with nutritional and metabolic disease and with the societal implications of the obesity epidemic.

From the reviews: "With the occurrence of world-wide obesity becoming an international epidemic along with its complications of type II diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, and fatty liver disease, the comprehensive therapist must clearly become aware of it along with politicians, environmentalists, social planners, fast-food marketers, and many others. This new book can help them all. ! This excellent textbook begins with a global perspective and continues through etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment -- including bariatric surgery which may ! extreme to many leaders." (William H. Wehrmacher and Harry Messmore, Comprehensive Therapy, November, 2010) "This comprehensive book on pediatric obesity includes novel topics such as the effect of maternal obesity on children (before and after birth) and the relationship between sleep (short sleep duration and sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea) and obesity. ! The book is designed for practicing endocrinologists, general pediatricians, bariatric medicine physicians, and nutritionists who manage or would like to manage pediatric obesity. It also could be of some interest to bariatric medicine providers involved in teaching." (Silvana Pannain, Doody's Review Service, December, 2010)
