When she is eleven years old, Martine is orphaned and sent to live with her grandmother on a game reserve in South Africa. There are secrets about Sawubona (the reserve) just waiting to be revealed, and rumours too about a fabled white giraffe - a trophy for hunters everywhere. One night Martine, lonely and feeling slightly rebellious too, looks out of her window and see a young albino giraffe - silver, tinged with cinnamon in the moonlight. This is the beginning of her mysterious and magical adventures - her discovery of her gift of healing and a secret valley that she travels to with the giraffe, where she'll find clues about her past and future. Above all it's is a heart-warming story, full of charm and atmosphere, and Martine's sheer delight in her giraffe friend and the fantastic landscape which is theirs to explore.

Die elfjährige Martine verliert ihre Eltern bei einem Brand und soll nun bei ihrer Großmutter leben, die in der Nähe von Kapstadt ein Wildreservat unterhält. Sie empfängt ihre Enkelin mit geradezu gouvernantenhafter Strenge und Unzugänglichkeit. Auch in der neuen Schule findet Martine keinen Freund. Als sie eines Abends einen jungen weißen Giraffenbullen sieht, schleicht sie sich aus dem Haus. Sie fühlt, dass "Jemmy", wie sie ihn nennt, genauso einsam ist wie sie; von Anfang an verbindet die beiden eine gewisse Magie.

Lauren St John ist in Zimbabwe aufgewachsen. Ihr bildmächtiger Roman spricht auch von eigenen Erfahrungen der Autorin. Die eidetische Kraft der Naturbeschreibungen und die ungewöhnliche Freundschaft zwischen dem Mädchen und dem mystischen Tier machen den Zauber der Geschichte aus. Lauren St John was born in Rhodesia in 1966 and lived on a farm there until she was 16. She worked as a journalist for several years and has written biographies of sporting heroes and Nashville musicians - golf and country music being two of her obsessions - for Transworld, Picador and Fourth Estate. Her memoir of growing up during independence in Zimbabwe was published by Hamish Hamilton in 2007.
