William Gerald Golding wurde am 19. September 1911 in St. Columb Minor/Cornwall geboren. Er begann im Alter von sieben Jahren zu schreiben. Er studierte aber später zunächst Naturwissenschaften und Englisch an einem Oxforder College. Ein erstes Buch mit Gedichten erschien ein Jahr vor seinem Studienabschluss. Ab 1939 lehrte er in Salisbury Englisch. Golding nahm als Soldat am Zweiten Weltkrieg teil. Diese Kriegserfahrung waren prägend für sein weiteres Schaffen. 1983 erhielt der britische Schriftsteller den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Er starb am 19. Juni 1993 in Perranworthal/Cornwall.
